CTR (Click-Through Rate)
The percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked on it. A CTR of 2% means 2 out of every 100 people who saw the ad tapped through.
CTR stands for Click-Through Rate. It measures how often people who see your ad actually click on it. In TikTok advertising, a click usually means tapping on the product link in a video or on a product card in the Shop Feed.
CTR = (Number of clicks / Number of impressions) x 100
If your ad was shown to 10,000 people and 180 clicked, your CTR is 1.8%.
The Simple Version
CTR tells you whether your ad is stopping the scroll. A high CTR means the video is grabbing attention and making people want to know more. A low CTR means people are swiping past. The ad is not compelling enough to interrupt what they were doing.
CTR in the Funnel
CTR is a top-of-funnel metric. It measures the first step: from seeing the ad to showing enough interest to click. But CTR alone does not tell you whether the campaign is working. Someone can click and never buy. That is why CVR follows CTR in the diagnostic sequence.
A useful way to diagnose a campaign:
- Low CTR, low CVR: The ad is not compelling and the product page is not converting. Fix the video creative first.
- High CTR, low CVR: People are clicking but not buying. The product page has a problem: pricing, photos, or reviews.
- High CTR, high CVR: The campaign is working. Scale it.
Benchmarks on TikTok
For TikTok Shop VSA campaigns, a CTR above 1.5% is generally healthy in early testing. Strong creative on TikTok can drive CTRs of 3–6%, especially when the first two seconds of the video lead with a clear problem or hook. CPM determines how many people see the ad. CTR determines how many of those people click. CVR determines how many buyers emerge.
How It’s Used on This Site
CTR is part of the ad performance diagnostic chain explained in the TikTok Shop blog series. This glossary entry connects to CPM, CVR, and ROAS so readers can trace how each metric feeds into the next when evaluating a campaign.
